Texas 40 Hour LPC Supervisor Training Course Syllabus

Course Description

This 40-hour training is designed to prepare Licensed Professional Counselors to meet the requirements for supervisor designation in Texas. The course provides comprehensive instruction in supervision theory, ethical and legal standards, multicultural competency, and applied supervisory practice. Emphasis is placed on the development of competent, ethical, and reflective supervisors through a combination of didactic instruction, experiential learning, and applied assignments.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and apply models and theories of clinical supervision.

  2. Describe the roles and responsibilities of a clinical supervisor.

  3. Develop and maintain effective supervisory relationships.

  4. Apply supervision methods including process, conceptualization, and personalization.

  6. Apply ethical decision-making models to supervision practice.

  7. Demonstrate knowledge of Texas LPC laws, rules, and professional standards.

This course meets the requirements for the 40-hour LPC Supervisor Training as outlined by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council. Instructional hours are allocated as follows:

  • Models of Supervision (minimum 3 hours required): 4 hours
    Content includes defining and conceptualizing supervision and application of supervision models.

  • Supervisory Relationship and Counselor Development (minimum 3 hours required): 4 hours
    Content includes supervisory alliance, counselor development, and professional growth.

  • Supervision Methods and Techniques (minimum 12 hours required): 14 hours
    Content includes roles of the supervisor (teacher, counselor, consultant); focus areas of supervision (process, conceptualization, and personalization); group supervision; multicultural supervision (including racial, ethnic, and gender considerations); and evaluation methods.

  • Ethics, Law, and Professional Standards (minimum 12 hours required): 14 hours
    Content includes Texas LPC Rules (Chapter 681, including §§681.91, 681.92, and 681.93), applicable subchapters, ethical codes (NBCC, ACES), and legal and professional issues relevant to supervision.

  • Administrative and Executive Tasks (minimum 3 hours required): 4 hours
    Content includes supervision plans, supervision contracts, time requirements, record keeping, and reporting.

Day 1: Foundations of Clinical Supervision (6 Hours)

  • Definition and purpose of clinical supervision

  • Distinction between clinical and administrative supervision

  • Roles and responsibilities of the supervisor

  • Models and theories of supervision

  • Supervisory relationship and counselor development

  • Burnout, compassion fatigue, and professional identity

  • Core components of supervision planning

  • Supervision interventions

Day 2: Ethics, Law, and Critical Issues in Supervision (6 Hours)

  • Texas LPC rules and regulatory framework

  • Ethical standards and decision-making models

  • Supervisor liability (direct and vicarious)

  • Informed consent in supervision

  • Documentation and record keeping requirements

  • Critical incidents in supervision, including:

    • Incompetence

    • Impairment and personal crises

    • Dual relationships

    • Sexual attraction in supervision

    • Client crisis and risk management

Follow-Up Session: Integration and Application (2 Hours)

  • Case consultation and discussion

  • Application of supervision models to practice scenarios

  • Ethical decision-making in supervision

  • Review and refinement of supervision plans and contracts

III. Supervision Methods and Techniques (14 Hours)

Evaluation and Completion Requirements

Participants must complete the following to receive credit:

  1. Attend all live instruction sessions (14 hours total).

  2. Complete all asynchronous modules and assignments (26 hours total).

  3. Submit all required assignments, including:

    • Supervision theory reflection

    • Ethics worksheet

    • Cultural competency reflection

    • Remediation plans

    • Supervision contract draft

  4. Participate in the follow-up session.

  5. Complete the post-training evaluation.

Certificate of Completion

A certificate of completion will be awarded upon verification of attendance, participation, and completion of all required coursework totaling 40 clock hours.

Course Completion Requirements and Timeline

Participants are expected to complete all components of the training, including live instruction and asynchronous coursework, within 90 days of the initial training date.

All assignments, required activities, and the post-training evaluation must be completed within this timeframe in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Failure to complete the course within the designated timeframe may result in the need to re-enroll or complete additional requirements, at the discretion of the instructor.
